The Regional Minister Hon. Kwadwo Nyamekye Marfo last Friday the 26th of February led a high powered delegation of the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) including the Regional Coordinating Director, Regional Director of Education, Regional Prisons and information officers, the MCE and many others as well as the press to supervise a clean up exercise in the Sunyani Township. The clean up exercise was directed by the President His Excellency John Evans Atta Mills through out the country as part of activities marking the 53rd independence anniversary celebration of Ghana on Saturday the 6th of March.
THE REGIONAL MINISTER HON. KWADWO NYAMEKYE MARFO ADDRESSING STUDENTS OF SUNYANI SENOIR HIGH SCHOOL WHILE THE REGIONAL DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION REV.S.A. AMANKWA AND OTHER DIGNITARIES LOOK ON.
The regional minister and his entourage toured all major streets of the capital including the Bosoma market area, the new and the old lorry parks in the city, the regional coordinating council, Area two, and area four all in the Sunyani Township to acquaint himself with how the exercise was going on. The regional minister also visited some schools to see how the students were cleaning their environments.
Schools visited included Sunyani Senior High School (SUSEC), St. James Seminary and the Presby cluster of schools in the city. At all these schools the students and school pupils were busily cleaning their surroundings at the time of our visit. While some of them were picking rubbish and burning them, others especially the girls were scrubbing the floor of their dinning Halls, classrooms and dormitories while others also clean the doors, windows and tables. In all these schools visited, the regional minister advised the students and the school pupils to always maintain cleanness for as he puts it “cleanness is next to Godliness”.
The Regional Minister advised the students to avoid any form of engaging in drugs saying “it could make you mad and ruin your future”. He advised them to take their studies very serious adding “so that when tomorrow we are dead and gone you can take over from us”. At St. James in particular, the regional minister and his entourage were full of praise for the clean environment that the students have kept and asked them to keep it up. The Regional Minister also praised the school (St. James) for the good results they have been producing in recent times and thus making the school the best in the country.
The Regional Director of Education Rev. S.A. Amankwaa also advised the students to avoid all social vices and rather take their studies serious so that they will grow into responsible adults in future. He also advised them to translate their clean environment into good results in their final examinations. The rector of St. James Seminary, very Reverend Alexander Ansu-Ebow and the Headmaster of Sunyani Senior High School Mr. Joseph Awuah thanked the regional minister for the 3 storey building dormitories promised them. They hoped that by the end of his term they might have benefitted a lot from the government. What was very surprising about the whole tour was that even though the department did al lot of public announcements about the exercise, many people did not participate in it. In town you find only few people especially zoom lion workers and party supporters participating in it while others went about their businesses unconcerned. It was only in the schools where participation was very high. It is anticipated that in future important national exercises such as this, people will put their parochial interest aside and join in it for all of us to move our nation Ghana forward.
